Finished Thoughts

Why You Need to Be Prepared for a Medical Emergency With Kids

Recently FB reminded me that ‘on this day’ 2 years ago I wrote about this on my timeline.  I still sit in the same dining room chair at every meal and sometimes find myself purposefully avoiding eye contact with the ground where I had laid him during all of this.  It was hard to read.  But talking about the hard stuff is what I told you I would do.  I also realized I would be an irresponsible mom and nurse if I didn’t share this again with all of you.  So, I dropped the thought of continuing work on the office makeover and here we are.  I am here to remind you of why you need to be prepared for a medical emergency with kids.

We had family visiting and were finishing up dinner.  The older kids asked to be excused because they couldn’t possibly sit still for another second.  We let them, and the typical 4-year-old chaos ensued.  Then the tears started to flow as #1 had suffered what we thought was a minor, everyday injury.  He ran into my arms crying, and then seconds later- what I thought would end in a kiss and dried tears- turned into a life-threatening medical emergency.

The details that followed in those next few minutes are now, thank GOD, those of a story that are his to tell.  For that reason only, I will spare you of them and give you my details.

God took the wheel.  He instantly switched my brain from mommy mode to nurse mode.  But the thought somehow crossed my mind in that moment how lucky I was to know what to do, what was happening, and what to do next should the scenario have gone differently.  An ambulance ride, stay in the hospital, and thank The Good Lord all normal test results later, #1 was fine and I can tell you with a grateful heart that 2 years later he is great.

It took 2 full days, tucking him into his own bed, and my head hitting my own pillow before I finally had my ‘come-back-to-earth-that-was-your-child moment.’  And it was ugly.  But then I was fine.  Except I couldn’t shake one thing. And that was how I would never, EVER, want someone to be faced with something like that and NOT know what to do.  I ask, no. I BEG. each of you to be sure you and whoever you entrust your babies with is First Aid and CPR certified.  You truly never know when a moment of pure bliss can become the unthinkable.  And the best thing you can do is have the knowledge to be able to help.

To make this easier for you, I am attaching 2 links below.  One for the American Red Cross and the other for the American Heart Association.  With either of these you can search for a training near you that best suits your needs.  From this mom and nurse, thank you for reading.  If I can help you further with this, please feel free to contact me on FB or at contact@seasthecrazy.com.
